Horse suffers 'cruel,

senseless' death

     A quarterhorse was shot
about 50 times in the stomach
and back with a small-caliber
handgun in what authorities
are calling a "senselessly
cruel" act of animal torture
this week in Washington
County.
     The horse, named Crook-
neck, was found dead when
his owner arrived to feed him
Sunday at the corral where he
was boarded in Anasazi Valley
near Ivins, said sheriff's Lt.
Jake Adams.
     The horse was riddled
with 30 to 50 bullets -- none to
the head, Adams said.
"I doubt it was a quick
process," Adams said. "A
small-caliber handgun is not
going to put a horse down,
especially shooting it in the
midsection."
     Investigators have not
determined a motive and have
no suspects, Adams said.
     "It's just sad and point-
less," Adams said.
